Buying Tips
Generally Speaking
• Shop for appliances that display the Energy Star® symbol. The advances in technology and materials have made a significant impact on energy and water consumption savings, as well as functionality and capacity.
• Always, always, always ask questions. Make sure that you get the features that you want and truly need. Don't over pay for features that you'll never use.
• While it's always good to shop and compare, find out who will service your product should it ever need parts or repairs in the future. Always ask who will install your new home appliance before you purchase it.
• If your appliance investment is substantial you may want to consider an extended warranty. This could add to your purchase price but may well be worth it in the long run. Ask a salesperson for details.
Refrigerators
• Measure the area where you will position the refrigerator before you shop/buy. Make sure that the new refrigerator will have sufficient room for the doors to open properly, if choosing a French Door model for example. If necessary, ask whether your new style refrigerator comes with reversible doors.
• Consider installation limitations when choosing a style since clearances may vary. Keep in mind that new appliances being installed and old appliances being removed must fit through all access areas, such as doors and hallways.
Cooking Ranges
• Make sure that you know what your home is "set up for", gas or electric. If you're using electric and gas is available you may want to consider switching over.
• When replacing or remodeling a kitchen, make sure that you have the exact measurements for your cooking range as the styles (freestanding, slide-in, drop-in, cooktops and wall ovens) vary greatly in their available widths.
Laundry
• When replacing old appliances, always measure the dimensions before shopping and/or buying to guarantee that your new appliances will fit. Keep in mind that new appliances being installed and old appliances being removed must fit through all access areas, such as stairways and doors. Also, new high-efficiency washers may have optional pedestals or side storage units which need extra room.
• Make sure you know what your appliance is "set up" for. Some dryers use gas, while others use electricity and each model is priced differently. If your dryer is set up for gas, don't forget to ask for the connection components.
• Given the range of models, styles and sizes of washers (front-loading, traditional top-loading or compact), consider the needs of your family, frequency of use, and what capacity you'll require from your washer/dryer.
Dishwashers
• When replacing old appliances, always measure the dimensions before shopping and/or buying. The standard size for Built-In models is 24", while Compact Dishwashers are generally 18".
• Some dishwashers are quieter than others. Bosch dishwashers specifically, have consistently been rated the quietest dishwashers in America.
Electronics
• You'll save yourself a lot of trouble if you buy your HDTV from someone who will also deliver, install, mount and wire your system for you.
• As newer model HDTVs are introduced, previous versions are often phased out and offered at greatly reduced prices. However, most of these items are strictly "While Supplies Last". Ask a salesperson for details and availability.
